Dismissed? Start with the date.
The dismissal date, any internal appeal outcome and the stated reason affect what happens next. Record them before messages, documents and deadlines become harder to manage.

Take these first steps now.
The common referral window is short.
The CCMA states that an unfair dismissal dispute generally must be referred within 30 days of dismissal, or within 30 days of a later final decision that upholds the dismissal after an internal appeal. A late referral generally needs a condonation application. Confirm the current rule and correct forum for your facts immediately.
Build a dismissal record that another person can follow.
Common mistakes: waiting for a complete file before checking the deadline, using an informal employer name on the referral, sending an emotional narrative without dates, or assuming an internal appeal pauses every time limit.
Know what may happen after referral.
Conciliation is an attempt to resolve the dispute. If the matter remains unresolved, the next route can depend on the reason for dismissal, the forum's jurisdiction and whether con-arb applies. Do not assume every dismissal follows the same hearing path.
Do not wait for every document before acting.
Start with the dismissal date, employer, industry and outcome letter. Missing documents can be identified during the assessment.
